About Holston Hills Country Club

Holston Hills Country Club is widely regarded as one of the finest Donald Ross courses in the American South and among the most intact examples of his work anywhere in the country. Built in 1927 on the historic MacDonald Farm in East Knoxville, the course was immediately recognized upon completion as the finest layout in Tennessee — and nearly a century later, that assessment still holds up for many who have played it.

Ross's design philosophy is evident in every hole: crowned greens that reject imprecise approaches, strategic bunkering placed to challenge the miss rather than punish all error, natural elevation changes that reward course management, and green complexes that create multiple compelling pin positions. The course stretches to 6,932 yards with a slope of 134, a genuine test that rewards shot-making over length.

What distinguishes Holston Hills from many historic courses is the degree to which the original design has been preserved. While other clubs have made wholesale changes to classic layouts in the name of modernization, Holston Hills has been careful stewards of Ross's intent. The result is a course that feels authentically of its era — a rare quality in American golf today.

The club provides caddie service, a full practice facility, fine dining, and a pro shop. As a strictly private club, access is through membership or as a guest of a member. The dress code is strictly enforced. Holston Hills hosts member tournaments, invitational events, and serves as a benchmark course against which other East Tennessee golf is measured.
