The championship golf course showcases the brilliant design work of Donald Ross, who expanded the original 9-hole James Foulis layout to a full 18-hole masterpiece in 1915. Ross's genius shines through in his ability to create what is famously known as "the hardest easy golf course in America" - a challenging championship layout masterfully fitted into just 105 acres. The par-70 course stretches 6,717 yards from the championship tees with a demanding 72.7 course rating and 134 slope rating.

Memphis Country Club has hosted four USGA championships, cementing its status among America's premier golf venues. The club welcomed the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1937 and 1979, the prestigious U.S. Men's Amateur in 1948, and the U.S. Men's Senior Amateur in 1959. These tournaments showcased the course's championship pedigree and Ross's strategic design elements to the golf world.

The course features Ross's signature design elements including crowned greens, well-protected sand bunkers, and tree-lined fairways with no water hazards. Notable highlights include the famous par-3 4th hole with its distinctive "volcano" green and the challenging "triangle of terror" on holes 15-17. The routing ingeniously uses the front nine counter-clockwise around the property perimeter while the back nine creates interior loops, maximizing every yard of the compact 105-acre property.

Recent major renovations have enhanced the club's facilities while preserving Ross's architectural legacy. The course features TifEagle ultradwarf bermudagrass greens, zoysia fairways, and 419 Bermuda approach areas, providing pristine playing conditions year-round. The club underwent its largest renovation in October 2023, including a new Racquets Facility, further cementing its position as Memphis's premier private club.
